2026 Course Fundations, Rewards program

The Royal Academy of Medicine of the Balearic Islands opens a competition to grant, during the year 2026, the Royal Academy of Medicine of the Balearic Islands Award—consisting of the title of corresponding academic and €1.000—to the author of the best paper submitted on a topic in Medicine or related Sciences in any of its specialties.

At the request of a health institution of the Balearic Islands, the Royal Academy of Medicine of the Balearic Islands announces the Mateu Orfila Award for the career of a health professional and awards a diploma to the winner.

Likewise, the Royal Academy of Medicine of the Balearic Islands jointly announces the following prizes, endowed with €1,500 and a diploma to the first signatory:

Jean Dausset Award, from the Illustrious Official Medical College of the Balearic Islands, for the best thesis in Medicine or related Sciences prepared in the Balearic Islands and defended during the year 2022.

Doctor Ramón Rotger Moner Award, for the best study on surgery and surgical specialties.

Hospital Quirónsalud Palmaplanas Award, for the best study on medical specialties.

Balearic Islands Official College of Nursing Award, for the best nursing research study in any of its fields.

Balearic Islands Official College of Pharmacists Award for the best research study in the field of pharmaceutical sciences.

ADEMA Award for the best oral health and nutrition research study.

Laboratorio Dr. Cortés Award for the best publication on gynecological oncology by professionals based in the Balearic Islands.

THE AWARDING OF PRIZES WILL BE GOVERNED BY THE FOLLOWING BASES

1. The Jean Dausset Award will be granted to the best doctoral thesis in Medicine or related Sciences prepared in the Balearic Islands and defended during 2025. The award will be decided by the Royal Academy and the Official College of Physicians of the Balearic Islands from among the proposals received before November 1, 2026.

2. he Mateu Orfila Award will be granted to one healthcare professional selected from the curricula proposed by entities in the Autonomous Community of the Balearic Islands that are related to health sciences. Proposals and curricula must be submitted before November 1, 2026.

3. Doctors, graduates, or degree holders in Medicine or related Sciences who belong to a European Union country may compete for the awards. Members of the Royal Academies of Medicine of Spain holding the positions of Numerary, Honorary, Emeritus, or Supernumerary Academician may not compete. Candidates must submit their works before November 1, 2026. Sponsors may publicize the competition bases through media they deem appropriate.

4. Works submitted for the awards cannot be simultaneously entered in other competitions nor have already been awarded. They must be original and unpublished; works already published in whole or in part at the time of awarding will not be accepted.

5. Submitted works must be written in Microsoft Word format, with 1.5 line spacing. Length must be a minimum of 20 pages and a maximum of 40 pages on A4 paper (single-sided), including the main text, bibliography/references, and any illustrative material. Up to six figures and six tables are permitted, with no more than 35 bibliographic references. Each work must include a title, keywords, and a structured summary (in Catalan, Spanish, or English) of about 250 words.

6. EOriginal documents, written in Catalan, Spanish, or English, must be submitted in 23:59 on October 31, 2026. The subject line of the email must indicate the name of the research prize being applied for.

The subject of the email will contain the name of the research prize for which the contest is being held.

To ensure anonymity, two files must be attached:

File 1: It will contain the complete text of the work, without any data that allows identifying the authorship. On the first page there must appear a motto or pseudonym and the name of the prize for which the competition is being held. The name of this file will coincide with the chosen motto or pseudonym.

File 2: The name of this second file will be “Data” and it will include the following information:

      – Title of the study.

      – Motto or pseudonym chosen.

      – Name of the authors.

      – Contact information, address and telephone.

7. Due to their characteristics, the doctoral theses that compete for the Jean Dausset Award will not be presented with the motto and escrow system, since their reading has been public, and they will be presented by means of a copy addressed to the corporate email.

8. Due to their characteristics, the works that opt for to the Dr Cortés Laboratory Award will be presented through a link to access the document, in a message addressed to the corporate email.

9. If the Academy deems it appropriate, a submitted work may be reassigned to compete for the prize most closely aligned with its subject matter.

10. Awards will be decided in an extraordinary governing session of the Royal Academy, based on reports from the corresponding evaluation committee. For sponsored awards, a sponsor-designated representative may participate in deliberations with voice but without vote.

11. Decisions of the competition are final and will be made public in a press conference with local media and other outlets the Academy deems appropriate. Winners will also be officially notified. The awards ceremony will take place at the solemn inaugural session of the 2027 academic year.

12. If a winning work has more than one author, the title of Corresponding Academician will be awarded only to the first signatory.

13. Awarded works become the property of the Royal Academy of Medicine of the Balearic Islands, which may publish them in its Academic Journal of Health Sciences. The first signatory of each winning work will be offered an opportunity to present an academic summary (a “píndola acadèmica”) to disseminate the work.

14. Prizes cannot be divided, but they may be declared vacant. In that case, the endowment of the sponsored awards will be allocated to grants awarded in a separate competition for that purpose.

15. Participation in this competition implies full acceptance of these rules, the interpretation of which is the exclusive responsibility of the Royal Academy.

16. Any conflict of interest of evaluation committee members regarding submitted works must be declared in advance; affected members cannot evaluate the work in question.
