Mart\u00ednez Mojica, del Departament de Fisiologia, Gen\u00e8tica i Microbiologia de la Universitat d\u2019Alacant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva\">Va obrir l&#8217;acte el president de la Reial Acad\u00e8mia de Medicina de les Illes Balears Excm Sr. Maci\u00e0 Tom\u00e0s Salv\u00e0 i va presentar al ponent el M. Il. Mart\u00ednez Mojica de 55 anys, va n\u00e9ixer a Elx (Alacant) i va comen\u00e7ar a estudiar Biologia a la Universitat de M\u00farcia, encara que la carrera la va acabar a Val\u00e8ncia i es va doctorar a la d&#8217;Alacant en 1993. Va seguir investigant en fisiologia bacteriana a la Universitat de Utah i en regulaci\u00f3 gen\u00e8tica en la d&#8217;Oxford. El 1997 va tornar al campus d&#8217;Alacant, on roman des de llavors com a professor titular de Microbiologia i investigador principal del Grup de Microbiologia Molecular. Precisament, \u00e9s a Alacant on va desenvolupar la seva gran troballa que ha revolucionat la medicina.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva\">\u00c9s un cient\u00edfic espanyol que porta d\u00e8cades fent un treball d&#8217;enorme calat per al m\u00f3n de la ci\u00e8ncia i la medicina. Des de fa uns anys, Francis Mojica apareix en totes les travesses per obtenir un Premi Nobel, en Medicina o en Qu\u00edmica, per les seves contribucions excepcionals i fonamentals a descobrir i caracteritzar els sistemes CRISPR de bacteris, base de tot el desenvolupament posterior i la conversi\u00f3 de aquests sistemes en eines d&#8217;edici\u00f3 gen\u00e8tica. Per als experts en la mat\u00e8ria, els descobriments de Mojica suposen un dels majors aven\u00e7os en biologia de la hist\u00f2ria recent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2136\" src=\"https:\/\/ramib.org\/oficial\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Mojica3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ramib.org\/oficial\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Mojica3.jpg 640w, https:\/\/ramib.org\/oficial\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Mojica3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ramib.org\/oficial\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Mojica3-630x420.jpg 630w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva\">Un descobriment revolucionari<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva\">Tot va comen\u00e7ar a les salines de Santa Pola, on Mojica va iniciar la seva tesi doctoral sobre un microorganisme anomenat &#8216;Haloferax mediterranei&#8217;. El cient\u00edfic va observar en el genoma d&#8217;aquest organisme una s\u00e8rie de seq\u00fc\u00e8ncies gen\u00e8tiques que es repetien a intervals regulars. A aquestes repeticions els va cridar CRISPR, per les sigles en angl\u00e8s de &#8220;repeticions palindr\u00f3micas curtes agrupades i regularment espaiades&#8221;. El que realment va descobrir va ser que els bacteris poden defensar-se dels atacs dels virus que les amenacen gr\u00e0cies al sistema CRISPR. Els bacteris capturen part de l&#8217;ADN del virus invasor i el guarden en el seu genoma per poder defensar-se en el futur davant d&#8217;infeccions pel mateix virus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img verdana, geneva\">El descobriment de Mojica, realitzat originalment el 1993 (quan descriu aquests sistemes per primer cop en arqueges que habiten a les salines de Santa Pola) i el 2003 (quan descobreix que el sistema CRISPR \u00e9s en realitat un sistema immune de defensa dels bacteris front a virus), va possibilitar que 10 anys despr\u00e9s aquestes mateixes eines poguessin reconvertir per al seu \u00fas en edici\u00f3 gen\u00e8tica.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Al finalitzar la pon\u00e8ncia es va duu a terme el debat el qual va tenir una gran participaci\u00f3 del p\u00fablic
